Machine Learning and Algorithm Improvement Consent
Your Choice and Complete Independence
This consent is completely optional. Declining it does not prevent you from using any core Mass in Motion feature, nor does it affect your access to Personalized Coaching. Accepting the general Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, or Personalized Coaching Notice alone does not constitute consent for population research.
Mass in Motion strictly isolates Permission A (Personalized Coaching — individual coaching benefit) from Permission B (Help Improve Algorithms — population research). Declining or withdrawing Permission B has ZERO impact on your individual Coach Learning Profile or Coach's Notes.
If you affirmatively opt in, you authorize Mass in Motion LLC to process eligible data covered by your consent for internal population-level machine-learning, cross-athlete statistical modeling, validation, and algorithm improvement. You retain ownership of your User Content.
1. What Population Research ML is used for
- Detect population-wide training plateaus and performance trends;
- Estimate recovery, fatigue, readiness, and athlete-state kinetics across training styles;
- Evaluate training-load, nutrition timing, sleep, and progression responses across athletes;
- Improve exercise selection, progression, deload, recovery, and training-rule thresholds used by deterministic algorithms;
- Compare predictions with later observed outcomes;
- Train, test, validate, calibrate, and evaluate internal models;
- Identify model errors, drift, bias, or poor calibration; and
- Produce research signals that may inform Mass in Motion's deterministic programming algorithms.
"ML learns. Algorithms program." Machine learning does not independently generate your workout program or alter deterministic programming constraints.
2. Eligible data
Depending on the features you use and the scope of your consent, eligible data may include workout and exercise history; sets, reps, load, RIR/RPE, completion, volume and strength estimates; running distance, duration, pace and heart-rate summaries; prescribed-versus-completed training; adherence, progression and deload history; recovery, readiness, fatigue and soreness information; sleep timing and duration; body weight; nutrition logs and meal timing; voluntary injury or limitation information; goals, experience, equipment and settings; and derived trends, estimates, model outputs and validation records.
We seek to limit model-development datasets to data reasonably relevant to the particular model or analysis.
3. De-identification
Where reasonably practical, Mass in Motion uses aggregated, de-identified, anonymized, or pseudonymized data instead of direct identifiers such as your name or email address. Pseudonymized information remains protected when it is still reasonably linkable to your account.
4. Apple Health, HealthKit, Health Connect, and other integrations
Third-party health-platform data remains subject to the source platform's terms, developer policies, permissions, and permitted-use restrictions. Your consent to Mass in Motion does not override those restrictions.
We will exclude third-party health-platform data from a model-development use when the applicable platform rules, user permissions, or legal requirements do not permit that use.
5. What this consent does not allow
- Sale of your personal information or consumer health data;
- Third-party targeted advertising using your health or fitness data;
- Data-broker use;
- External AI providers training their own general-purpose, foundation, or customer-shared models on your identifiable Mass in Motion health/fitness data;
- Use of health data for employment, credit, housing, or insurance eligibility;
- Medical diagnosis or treatment by the ML system; or
- A materially different purpose without any new disclosure or consent required by law.
6. Service providers
Current position: no third-party ML processor is approved to process identifiable or reasonably linkable optional research data. If Mass in Motion proposes to use a cloud, data-processing, analytics, model-infrastructure, or development provider for this work in the future, we will complete the required privacy, security, contractual, consent, and platform review before that provider receives eligible data.
7. Human access
Authorized Mass in Motion personnel or contractors may review limited data when reasonably necessary for data-quality validation, model-error investigation, safeguard testing, calibration or bias review, security, or other approved internal research. Access to linkable consumer health data is restricted according to applicable law, platform rules, access controls, and your consent.
8. Withdrawal
You may withdraw optional ML consent for future covered processing through an available in-app privacy control or by contacting brandon@massinmotionapp.com. After withdrawal is processed, Mass in Motion will stop adding your identifiable or reasonably linkable covered data to new optional model-development processing, except where continued processing is permitted or required by law.
Where reasonably feasible and legally required, linkable source records will be removed or excluded from active model-development datasets. Irreversibly de-identified or aggregate data may no longer be capable of being associated with you.
9. Trained models and deletion
Completed trained models generally contain learned statistical parameters rather than retrievable copies of each person's records. Account deletion or consent withdrawal may therefore not make it technically possible to reverse a completed model-training run or isolate the mathematical effect of one person's lawfully processed de-identified data.
Mass in Motion may retain lawfully de-identified data, aggregate statistics, evaluation results, and trained model parameters where permitted by law. We do not rely on this provision to retain identifiable or reasonably linkable source data when applicable law requires that source data to be deleted.
10. Age Screening for optional research
Optional research participation is available only to people age 18 or older. Mass in Motion uses the self-reported date of birth associated with your account together with a separate Age Screening response in the app. Mass in Motion systems calculate and enforce eligibility; accepting this consent disclosure alone does not enroll you.
This process does not collect a government ID, driver's license, selfie, or other identity document. Your date of birth is not used as an ML feature, research observation field, training-dataset feature, analytics property, or telemetry field.
Research eligibility begins only after a successful consent and Age Screening decision. Data does not become retroactively eligible merely because you later turn 18. Declining or not completing Age Screening affects only optional research participation and does not affect workouts, programs, logging, recovery, nutrition, Personalized Coaching, or other Mass in Motion features.
11. Changes
If Mass in Motion materially expands the categories of consumer health data used, the purposes for which it is used, or the categories of parties with whom it is shared, we will provide additional notice and obtain new consent where required by law. Continued app use is not a substitute for renewed affirmative consent when renewed consent is legally required.
12. Related notices
This consent supplements the Privacy Policy, Consumer Health Privacy Notice, Personalized Coaching and Data Use Notice, Terms of Service, and Account Deletion and Data Deletion Policy.
