That is really the whole reason this calculator exists.
You did a hard set.
You know the weight.
You know the reps.
That is enough to get a useful estimate without loading a true max single every time you want to know whether strength is moving.
The calculator uses the Epley equation: 1RM ≈ weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30).
The math is the easy part.
The set you feed it is where things can get dumb.
225 for five does not tell the whole story
Say you bench 225 for five.
One version of that set ends with the fifth rep barely moving.
Another version ends and you could have done three more.
Same weight.
Same reps.
Obviously those should not tell us the exact same thing about your max.
That is why I included reps in reserve.
If you did five with two left, the calculator treats the effort more like a seven-rep capability before estimating the max.
Still an estimate.
Just a less lazy one.
I do not love high-rep sets for estimating max strength
A hard set of three to eight tells me a lot more about maximal strength than a set of twenty.
Once the reps get high, endurance starts taking over more of the result.
One lifter can be great at rep work.
Another lifter with the same true max can hate anything over six.
So if a huge rep set tells you your estimated squat suddenly jumped fifty pounds, I would not immediately load the bar like the calculator discovered hidden strength overnight.
Use some judgment.
The percentage table is not a workout prescription
This is important.
The table takes the estimate and shows what common percentage ranges look like in actual weight.
That is useful when 82% sounds abstract and you just want to know what plates go on the bar.
It does not mean everybody should get the same reps at the same percentage.
I have had days where a normal percentage feels fantastic.
I have had days where the same kind of load feels like somebody changed gravity.
That is why I pair percentages with RPE and RIR.
Running makes the estimate and today's load two different questions
Say the calculator puts your squat around 400.
Eighty percent is 320.
The calculator will still say 320 after a hard run yesterday.
Your legs may have a different opinion.
The estimated max is a strength reference.
It is not a guarantee about how 320 should feel today.
If the program wants a certain effort and the planned weight is way off that effort, I want the actual set winning that argument.
The number gets more useful when you watch it over time
One estimate is interesting.
A trend is better.
If hard, comparable sets keep producing higher estimates over several exposures, now I am much more interested.
If one weird high-rep set produces a giant spike and nothing else agrees with it, I am less excited.
Strength data should behave like training data, not a high score somebody farms with the friendliest possible set.
